Choosing Door Hardware
What’s the difference between Passage, Privacy, and Entrance options?
Understanding the function of each option helps ensure your doors are fitted with the right level of security and usability.
- Passage
Non-locking levers used for internal doors where privacy isn’t needed—ideal for hallways, studies, or connecting spaces. Passage functions latch the door closed but don’t include a locking mechanism.
- Privacy
Include a simple locking function, operated by a turn snib on the inside with an emergency release on the outside. Commonly used for bedrooms, bathrooms, and other spaces where privacy is needed but high security isn’t required.
- Entrance
Designed for external doors with a more secure locking setup. These include a lock on the outside and either a key or thumb turn on the inside.
A key on the inside allows the door to be fully deadlocked, meaning it can’t be opened from either side without a key. A thumb turn allows the door to be locked or unlocked from the inside with a simple turn, making it a more practical option for everyday use.
Choosing the right option comes down to how the room will be used and the level of privacy or security required. If you're unsure, we’re here to guide you.
What are the different Door Set Options and what’s included in each?
Our range is available in a number of kit options to suit different functions and installation needs.
- Lever Set Only
A pair of levers on a backplate or rose, without a latch or locking mechanism. Ideal if you're replacing levers but already have latches or locks installed.
- Passage Kit
A complete kit for internal, non-locking doors. Includes a pair of levers, tubular latch (tube latch), and striker plate—everything needed for a standard internal door.
- Privacy Kit
Designed for areas where privacy is needed. Includes a lever set, privacy latch, turn snib, and emergency release—ideal for bathrooms and bedrooms.
- Entrance Kit – Dual Function (Key/Key)
Includes a lever set on backplate (with euro holes) or on rose with a separate escutcheon, along with a mortice lock, key/key euro cylinder, and all required components.
Suitable for front doors, laundry doors, patio doors, or anywhere security from both sides is important.
- Entrance Kit – Standard (Key/Thumb)
Includes a lever set on backplate or rose with escutcheon, a mortice lock, key/thumb euro cylinder, and all required components.
Suitable for front doors, laundry doors, and patio doors. This option allows the door to always be unlocked from the inside using the thumb turn.
How do I know which door hardware function I need?
Consider how the room will be used. Bedrooms and bathrooms generally need privacy sets. Entry doors require entrance sets, while hallways or studies typically use passage sets.
If you’re unsure, refer to the door set options above or contact us for guidance.
Do I need a left or right-handed lever?
All of our lever sets come in pairs—one left-handed and one right-handed—so there’s no need to select handing in most cases.
If you’re installing a half euro cylinder internally and prefer not to show visible locking detail externally, please contact us and we’ll guide you.
If you require a half set (a lever on one side only, such as for a cupboard), we can arrange this for you. Just let us know if it’s left or right-handed and we’ll provide the correct configuration using a Taylor Spindle.
How many hinges do I need per door?
For internal doors (without double glazing or wrought iron):
- Up to 2340mm high × 870mm wide: 3 hinges
- 2340mm to 2600mm high × 870mm wide: 4 hinges
For external doors (including double glazing or wrought iron):
- Up to 2040mm high × 870mm wide: 3 hinges
- Up to 2340mm high × 870mm wide: 4 hinges
For larger or heavier doors, it’s best to check with your builder or contact us with the door size and weight.
Do I need Flush Bolts, Barrel Bolts, or Panic Bolts for my door?
Bolts are required if you have double or French doors. They hold the passive door closed while you use the active door for everyday access.
You can then unlock the bolts to open both doors when needed.
A bolt is required at the top and bottom of the passive door. Some people also choose to install an additional bolt on the active door for added security.
The top bolt is often longer than the bottom bolt, especially on doors over 2040mm high.
For example, a 2340mm door may use a 300mm or 400mm top bolt and a 200mm bottom bolt, making the top bolt easier to reach. A 200mm bolt can still be used at the top, but may be less convenient depending on reach.
Do I need to consider “Commonly Paired With” items?
We’ve included Commonly Paired With items to help you choose everything you need without missing anything important.
For example, when selecting a lever kit, you’ll likely also need hinges in the same finish. If you're fitting out double or French doors, you may also need bolts to hold the passive door in place while using the active door day to day.
It’s a simple way to make sure everything works together and looks consistent across your space.
What is a dummy lever?
A dummy lever is a fixed, non-operational lever used for pull-only or decorative purposes. It doesn’t turn, latch, or lock.
These are often used on wardrobe doors, the fixed side of double or French doors, or anywhere you want a consistent look without a functioning mechanism.
While we don’t sell complete dummy sets, we do offer the Taylor Spindle, which converts a standard lever into a dummy-style function.
For example, the Taylor Spindle can be paired with a passage lever (left-hand or right-hand) on a pair of hallway double or French doors—where one lever functions normally to open the door, and the other is fixed in place to match.
Are your products suitable for both new builds and renovations?
Yes. Our collection is selected to suit both new doors and existing doors.
If you're renovating, it’s worth checking your current door measurements against the product specifications. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us.
Can I use these door levers with existing doors and locks?
In most cases, yes. It’s important to check compatibility with door thickness, backset, latch type, and stile width.
All key measurements are listed on each product page. If needed, you can send through photos and dimensions for guidance.
What is a backset, and how do I measure it?
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle hole or lock mechanism.
Standard backsets in Australia include 30mm, 44mm, 57mm, 60mm, and 70mm.
To measure, use a tape measure from the edge of the door to the centre of the existing hole.
Are your products compatible with standard Australian door sizes?
Yes. All products are selected to suit standard Australian door sizes unless otherwise stated.
You’ll find exact measurements and compatibility details on each product page. Or you can view all Installation Guides & Templates here.
Do you offer finishes that match existing fixtures within my home or space?
We offer a range of premium finishes, including matt black, brushed brass, satin chrome, and more.
If you're trying to match an existing finish, feel free to share a photo and we’ll help guide your selection.
How do I install the hardware myself — do I need a professional?
Our hardware is designed for straightforward installation, and most products include clear instructions. (View Installation Guides & Templates here.)
If you’re working with existing doors or want a more precise finish, a licensed tradesperson is recommended.
